Triple Glazing

  • If you want to upgrade to an even more energy-efficient window, then opt for triple glazing.

Triple glazing works in much the same way as double glazing. Frames are built with gaps between the glass, where a gas is used to reduce heat transfer and stop cold air from coming inside. But when it comes to triple glazing, there’s an extra pane of glass and an extra layer of this gas, so heat retention is enhanced, and you’ll stay cosy even on the coldest days. These are the most energy-efficient windows on the market.

St. Ives Windows create some of the most innovative window products, and that includes our triple glazing range. They help keep your home cosy, so you spend less on your energy bills.

You’ll often find triple glazing in some of the coldest countries of the world. In Scandinavia, it’s often used to make homes energy efficient, and it also helps reduce the amount of outside noise that enters your home.

Common Questions

Can triple glazing make a difference?

Triple glazing is much more insulative than single- or double-glazed windows or doors. When measuring the insulative properties of glazing, we use the U-value. The lower the U-value, the lower the heat loss. The U-value of double glazing is 1.2 on average, while triple glazing is only 0.6, meaning they are around twice as efficient. On cold days, when you turn on the heating, very little heat escapes from triple glazing, so you can cut your energy bills.

Is it worth upgrading from double to triple glazing?

Triple glazing has excellent insulative properties, which is why you’ll often see it used in Scandinavia, where winters can be long, bitter and extremely cold. If you live in a rural or coastal area of Cornwall, where the nights can be particularly chilly, it may be worth upgrading to triple glazing. However, if you live in a town or city, and already have decent double glazing, you might not notice a huge difference. Why not speak to us about whether triple glazing is suitable for you?

How long can triple glazing last?

When you buy triple glazing from St. Ives Windows, you get a 10-year manufacturer’s guarantee. However, they’ll usually last much longer for that. We’d usually expect them to offer good energy efficiency for 20 years, and sometimes up to 35 years with only a slight reduction in insulative properties. You can help your windows last longer by giving them a clean with warm, soapy water on a regular basis to remove dirt and debris.

What is the difference between double and triple glazing?

Double glazing is made with two layers of glass in the same pane, with a gap in between that’s filled with a dense gas called Argon. This dense gas allows for better insulation, as it stops cold from the outside transferring to the inside pane, and also helps dampen outside noise. Triple glazing works in a similar way, except with an extra panel, allowing for even better insulation and noise dampening. Of course, this does result in a slightly thicker pane, so it’s worth thinking about whether you’d prefer a slimmer frame or better insulation.
