Tilt and Turn Windows
-
If you can’t decide what kind of windows you want, why not take a look at our tilt and turn windows? They allow you to enjoy the great outdoors, even during rainy or cold British winters.
Tilt and turn windows are unique because, as the name suggests, they can be opened two ways. You can push the bottom of the pane outwards to tilt the window, letting in some fresh air, while the sloped angle of the windows keeps out the rain. There are also tilt and turn windows that are suitable for basements which slope the opposite way, although these don’t offer rain protection.
You can also open the window by turning it either inwards using the side hinge. This is an excellent way to increase the ventilation in your home, letting in a breeze on hot days. Because these windows are so easy to clean and low maintenance, it’s easy to see why they’re among the most popular window choices.

Are tilt and turn windows secure?
Because a tilt and turn window has two opening and locking mechanisms, you may be concerned that they are easier to break into. Luckily, if you choose high-quality windows, such as the ones manufactured by St. Ives Windows, you can be sure they’re as secure as possible. We follow the initiative which was started by the UK police to reduce burglaries, and fit all our windows with secure locks. Once installed, we’ll show you how to secure your windows for your peace of mind.
What size tilt and turn windows do you offer?
St. Ives Windows manufactures tilt and turn windows in our state of the art factory in Clevedon. This means your windows can be as large or small as you need them to be. In our factory, we can make small bathroom windows, or large feature windows. The choice is yours. If you’re looking for larger windows for the ground floor, our patio doors might also be suitable for your needs.
How do you operate tilt and turn windows?
Tilt and turn windows can be opened two different ways, depending on the weather and how much of a breeze you’d like to get into the room. You can tilt them outwards, which lets in a little fresh air, while still remaining secure. The angle of the windowpane means, if there’s a sudden burst of rain, your home stays dry. During the summer, you will probably want to use the turn function, which opens the pane inwards, letting in lots of ventilation. If you have more than one tilt and turn window, keeping them both open is an excellent way to get a cool breeze through the house on hot days.
How do tilt and turn windows work?
Tilt and turn windows are manufactured with one hinge at the top or bottom, then another hinge on the side. This allows them to turn in two perpendicular directions, so you can control how much you’d like the window open and how you’d like to open it. Made to the highest quality, they are hardwearing and also offer excellent security for your home.
Can tilt and turn windows open inwards or outwards?
You don’t have to choose between inward and outward opening windows when you choose tilt and turn. They open both inwards and outwards, although in different ways, which gives you control of how you want your windows to open and by how much. You can either tilt them outwards, for ventilation plus protection from the rain, as well as inwards when you want more of a breeze.
Why should I choose tilt and turn windows?
The main advantage of tilt and turn windows is that they give you more control over how much fresh air you want in your home. Open them from the top for a slight breeze, or at the side for full ventilation. Opening them at the top also means your property is more secure, as it’s very difficult for someone to access your home through the small gap.
