Stable Doors
-
Stable doors are a classic style that allow you to enjoy extra natural light and fresh air, without having to keep your door open all the way.
Stable doors offer excellent security for those who have children or pets. When you open up the top half, you get the benefits of having an open door, but you don’t need to worry about small children or animals wandering outside and being in danger.
You’ll often find stable doors in rustic, period homes, but we think they add a homely touch to all sorts of properties. St. Ives Windows can create your doors in a variety of woodgrain finishes, classic white, or even bright colours, so you can get the look that reflects your personality.
If you’d like to open up your home and enjoy your garden more often, but don’t have space for patio doors or French doors, then stable doors can be an excellent alternative. You can open up the top and enjoy garden views, feeling like you’re outside even when you’re stuck indoors, while only needing the same amount of space as a single door.
Stable doors are just as secure as any of the doors in our range. We fit these doors with a Yale locking cylinder which is extremely difficult to snap, drill or pick, so you have peace of mind knowing that your door is keeping your home safe.

Are stable doors secure?
Stable doors are a little more complex than a standard door, with more moving parts, which means it’s important they’re built to a high quality to ensure security. When St. Ives Windows create stable doors, we ensure they have a strong bolt to keep both parts together, meaning when it’s closed, it’s just as secure as any other door. For extra security, you may want to choose a door that has separate locks for each panel too, making things more difficult for a potential intruder.
How do stable doors work?
Stable doors look like normal doors, but they’re made out of two sections within the door frame: one at the top and one at the bottom. This design was originally designed for stables, where the top is opened for the horse to poke their head through, while the bottom is closed to stop the horse from escaping. This design is ideal for homes with pets and children, as the bottom can stay closed while you open the top and enjoy the extra ventilation. When both panels are closed, you can bolt them together for security. Don’t worry, when your door is installed, we’ll show you exactly how it works.
Do stable doors open inwards or outwards?
St. Ives Windows can manufacture your stable doors in our UK factory, which means you get to choose whether they open inwards or outwards. Which option is better? It really depends on your own preferences. Outward opening doors are the most common choice, as they don’t take up any space in your home. But we understand that they aren’t always suitable, as the front panel may block a window or there could be obstacles in the way. If inward opening doors are more suitable, we are happy to manufacture and install them for you.
Can you make PVCu stable doors?
Yes, our stable doors can be made from PVCu. PVCu stable doors are an excellent choice as they offer energy efficiency and security for your home. You can opt for wood-finish PVCu doors, which can give you a classic or rustic look while having the advantages of uPVC, or for more modern homes, you might want to opt for classic white. If you’d like to find out more about the different style options, simply get in touch with us today.
Why should I choose a stable door?
Stable doors aren’t just for farmhouses and homes in the countryside. The look can be adapted to suit all sorts of properties, and they’re a practical choice for all sorts of homes, whether they’re in a town, city or somewhere more rural. You can keep the bottom of your stable door closed and locked, keeping kids and pets inside, while enjoying the breeze from the open leaf of the door. Wondering whether a stable door will work in your home? Simply get in touch with St. Ives Windows and we can tell you more about these products.
Can my stable doors be built with windows?
Yes, it’s possible to add stable doors with glazed panels in whatever style you like. One of the most popular options for a glazed stable door is to have a glass panel at the top to let in natural light, but you can have glass on the bottom too if you want. We can even add decorative glass to add a unique touch or for extra privacy. Stable doors with glass panels are still secure. We use toughened double glazing as standard to keep your home safe, as well as providing excellent energy efficiency.

Don’t just take our word for it!
Our suppliers conform to strictly controlled and independently monitored Quality Management Systems such as ISO 9001, to ensure that everything is done correctly and according to best practise.
