Sash Windows

  • Installing our sash windows means you can enjoy a traditional, charming look with all the advantages of modern windows. Sash windows can be seen on period homes from the last few centuries, but older homes often have timber frames that aren’t as good as modern window frame options.

When you have new sash windows installed by St. Ives Windows, you can replace draughty, rattling windows and outdated single glazing. New uPVC or aluminium sash windows can give you better insulation, and because they can be tilted open, they are easy to clean while still being suitable for listed homes.

It’s easy to see why sash windows have been popular for so long. They add character and charm to any home, while allowing for lots of light and ventilation. They’re also easy to use, with a smooth, sliding operation.

Are uPVC sash windows good?

While uPVC is practical, it’s never been thought of as beautiful. However, nowadays, uPVC can be used to create traditional looking styles such as sash windows. This means you can enjoy the benefits of uPVC like low maintenance, and the classic style of a sash window.

uPVC is also cheaper than timber frames and tends to last much longer without needing maintenance. With many woodgrain finishes available, you can get the good looks of timber windows without the hassle.

Can sash windows come with double glazing?

Order sash windows from St. Ives Windows and they’ll come with double glazing as standard, with the option to upgrade to triple glazing. These glazing types use layers of glass with gas trapped between them, so warm air doesn’t escape your home and cold air doesn’t get inside.

Our UPVC sash windows are easy to fit with double glazing, so you get all the advantages of beautiful, period-style sashes while still getting excellent levels of insulation that keep your home warm and cosy.

How do you measure for sash windows?

When sash windows are to be installed, these important measurements need to be taken:

  • The width of the sash window, from one side of the box frame to the other
  • The height of the sash window – this includes both sashes inside the box frame
  • The box frame height – from the top of your window frame to the windowsill
  • The width of your box frame – this needs to include the entire window frame

St. Ives Windows will do the measurements for you during your consultation to ensure that the correct size is manufactured and fitted.

How does a sash window work?

A sash window has two panels and at least one of these panels will move up and down. A single hung sash window will have one panel that moves, while a double hung sash window will have top and bottom panels that can both move. This can allow more air into your home.

Sash windows operate with a pulley, so when you slide your window into the position you want it at, the window stays in place. The counterweight stops it from slamming shut.

Should I choose uPVC or aluminium windows?

If you want to stay budget-friendly, uPVC is the best option. It’s a material that’s naturally insulative and doesn’t need much maintenance. All you need to do is clean dirty frames with warm, soapy water to keep them looking good.

Aluminium windows tend to cost more than uPVC, but they are strong and can look great on period homes. We can create aluminium sash windows with slimmer frames, so you can enjoy a less obstructed view and can let more light into your home.

Which part of the window is the sash?

The window sash is the part that sits inside the window frame, keeping the glass panes together. With single hung sash windows, only one panel will move, while double hung sash windows will have two panels that move up and down.
