Orangeries

  • You can add elegance to your home with one of our stylish orangeries. Traditionally, orangeries were attached to the finest period homes and used to be a place to grow exotic plants that wouldn’t survive the British weather.

Nowadays, orangeries are more likely to be used as an additional living area and to extend the amount of space you have in your home. Orangeries are different to conservatories in that they tend to be more solid, with a dwarf wall along the bottom of the structure and solid edges to the roof. There is usually still glass on the roof to let in natural light and give you a view of the sky.

Orangeries are popular around the St. Ives, Hayle and Cornwall areas, allowing people to enjoy the outdoors all year-round. While they are less expensive than a full extension, they tend to feel sturdier than a conservatory, so you can enjoy your home for years to come.

Common Questions

What is an orangery?

An orangery is similar to a conservatory, but the main difference is that it tends to have more brickwork to make a more solid construction. Usually, an orangery will have a dwarf wall plus several pillars, and while it can be built with a lantern roof or similar to let in light, the roof has a solid edge. Orangeries used to be a place for people in colder climates to grow exotic plants like fruit trees, but nowadays, it’s usually used to create additional living space and let in more natural light.

Are conservatories and orangeries different things?

Conservatories tend to be made mostly from glass, including the windows, doors and usually the roof. This lets in lots of natural light. While orangeries are also good for letting in light, they tend to use a lot more brick or stone than a conservatory, which has the advantage of making them more energy efficient. Some people feel that conservatories feel more like an outdoor space, while orangeries are more like a traditional extension. Of course, the final choice of which one you have installed is up to you.

Does an orangery get warmer than a conservatory?

Orangeries are built with more brick and tile and less glass than conservatories. This tends to make them more energy efficient and easier to keep at a comfortable temperature. However, conservatories have improved a lot in recent years, and as long as you use double glazed A+ rated glass, your conservatory should stay a comfortable temperature all year round. Whether you choose a conservatory or orangery from St. Ives Windows, you can be sure it’ll be made from high quality, modern materials that keep it as warm as possible in the winter.

Is it cheaper to opt for an orangery rather than an extension?

While an orangery tends to be more expensive than a conservatory, it’s usually less expensive than a full extension. If you want something that’s a bit more substantial than a conservatory, then an orangery is a good way to add lots of bright and open space to turn into a dining room, living room or whatever you like. Contact us today and we can give you a quote for a new orangery.
