Lantern Roof Conservatories

  • Lantern roof conservatories make an elegant, grand style statement in any home. Not only do they look beautiful, they also let in lots of natural light and are a practical option.

Lantern roof conservatories are made with two tiers, divided by a row of windows, which gives it a raised look.

Because lantern roofs are reminiscent of grand old homes, and were often seen in Victorian and Edwardian properties, they are ideal for period properties. However, they come in both classic and modern styles, so we can help you find one that suits your home, whether it’s a new-build or centuries old.

Even when there’s dull grey weather outside, lantern roofs bring natural light into your living space. This makes your home feel more spacious and open and is a feature that can be enjoyed year-round.

A lantern roof can be built onto an existing conservatory, or we can design and create a lantern roof conservatory from scratch. St. Ives Windows manufactures these products in the UK, so you can be sure of a high-quality finish and weather resistance.

  • A Lantern Roof conservatory uses fewer bars to let in even more light. With an extended eaves beam, rather than a flat roof, the internal pelmet and external cornice create a stunning orangery roof style.

A decorative cornice is used outside to hide the guttering and create beautiful sight lines.
The internal insulated pelmet will enable you to enjoy better lighting and thermal performance. You can even opt for integrated spotlights and speakers to enhance your experience.

What is a lantern conservatory?

A lantern roof conservatory is ideal for those who don’t want a glass roof but would like plenty of natural light in their home. These roofs are solid and have a glass panel in the middle, which is pitched, allowing light to come through. Outside, there’s a decorative cornice to hide the guttering. Lantern roofs aren’t just a beautiful feature, they also let in the light and let you enjoy sky views from your sofa.

Can a roof lantern let in more light?

Roof lanterns are great at letting in lots of natural light. Because of the way they are designed, even on grey days you’ll find the room feels much lighter, so you aren’t wasting electricity on lamps or lights. A roof lantern is estimated to let in around three times more light than a window alone. However, they can also be fitted with a UV filter, so when there’s a heatwave, some of the sun’s rays are deflected to keep your room cool. This not only helps cool your room, but also prevents damage to your furniture that can be caused by UV rays bleaching soft furnishings over time.

Are roof lanterns energy efficient?

Roof lanterns can lose slightly more heat than a completely tiled and insulated roof. That’s why, when we build your roof lantern, we use double glazing that has as high a thermal efficiency rating as possible. You can even upgrade to triple glazing if you’re concerned about energy efficiency, which is ideal for colder climates like the UK. You should remember that roof lanterns let light into your home, which can also make your property more energy efficient and cut down your electric bill.

How are roof lanterns cleaned?

The best option is to use a sponge with a long handle, and use warm, soapy water to gently clean off any build up of dirt or debris. Avoid cleaning them on a sunny day, as this can make them streaky,

Our roof lanterns can also be fitted with self-cleaning glass which cuts down on the amount of cleaning the glass needs. Why not get in touch to find out more?

Energy saving is incredibly important and so is keeping your fuel bills down. We are continuously looking for ways to make our projects energy efficient and one way is to choose new PVCu windows and doors. Not only will they help to keep your project warmer, they will reduce your energy loss.

Don’t just take our word for it!

Our suppliers conform to strictly controlled and independently monitored Quality Management Systems such as ISO 9001, to ensure that everything is done correctly and according to best practise.

Our windows are tested independently by British Standards for security, weather tightness and strength performance. This means that periodically, we have to send them to independent test houses, in order to be tested to destruction.
