Are French doors different to French windows?

The main difference between French doors and French windows is how they are used. They both have the same sort of design and open in the same way, with two glass panes inside the same frame, opening up without anything in the middle such as a pillar. This allows for an unobstructed view and/or access.

French doors are installed either on the ground floor, opening up into the garden like patio doors, or onto a balcony or terrace. Great for enjoying the view or just getting lots of fresh air.

Are French windows secure?

French windows can be as secure as any other window, depending on the quality of the materials used to make it, the type of glazing and the lock mechanism used. At St Ives, we take security very seriously, and all our products are approved by the Police-led initiative, which works to reduce burglaries in the UK. We use three-point locking systems, locking shoot-bolts, high security hinges and thermally toughened glass on all our double glazing, and our expert installers won’t leave your home until your windows are completely secure.

Where do French windows get their name?

French windows and French doors are both styles that date back to the Renaissance period. In 17th century France, architectural styles involved lots of natural light, so people in the finest homes started to use more glass and have bigger windows and doors installed. This included large windows that could be used as doors, allowing them to access balconies. The style caught on across Europe in the following decades and has been a major trend since.

Do French windows swing inwards or outwards?

Because St. Ives Windows manufactures your French windows to your specifications, we can build them to swing either inwards or outwards. Inward-opening windows can be useful, as you can clean them from the inside of your home, so can be good for high rise homes. But you do need unobstructed space and things like curtains can get in the way.

Windows that open outward are the most common choice. When you open French windows, you get a great view of your outdoor space, and they have anti-slam technology that stops them from slamming if there’s a sudden gust of wind. However, the decision as to whether you have inward or outward opening windows is down to you.

Why should I consider French windows?

French windows are ideal for when you want to enjoy the view outside. When they are open, there aren’t any panels or pillars in the way, just unobstructed views, so they’re popular with those who live in the country or on the coast of Cornwall. French windows are also a style that’ll give you a lot of ventilation, and you can prop them open to whatever angle you like to allow a small breeze or lots of fresh air into your home. Our team will be happy to discuss some of the advantages of French windows to you.

Can you use a French window as a fire escape?

According to FENSA regulations, if you have an upper floor that’s under 4.5 metres from the ground, it must have a fire escape window fitted. Fire escape windows need to be able to provide a space of over 0.3 metres squared, that’s unobstructed, in case anyone needs to escape through these windows. French windows are excellent as fire escape windows, as they have no central pillar, so it’s easy to make them the right size to use as a fire escape window.
