Do French doors have to be double?

French doors are, by their definition, two doors that come in the same frame. This means, when opened, you can access the outside without an obstruction like a pillar. However, you don’t need to open both doors at the same time if you don’t want to. You can open one side or the other, or both at the same time. If you just want a single door, contact us and we’ll find the solution for your space.

What’s the difference between patio doors and French doors?

The difference between patio doors and French doors is how they open. French doors have two doors inside one frame that swing either inwards or outwards, while patio doors have two panels, and one slides behind the other. The type that suits your home will depend on how much space you have. Although French doors give you a bigger space to walk out of and increased ventilation, the doors might get in the way if you are short on space. Patio doors slide across, so there’s a smaller opening, but they don’t take up space in your garden.

Why are they called French doors?

French doors gained popularity in France during the Renaissance period. In the finest homes, there was a trend for big windows that let in lots of natural light. Big windows also allowed for homes to be lighter and brighter in the days before electric lights. These large glass doors became a way to open up the home, allowing people to step out onto their patio or balcony. This look then became popular across Europe and has remained an elegant choice to this day.

Will I need planning permission for French doors?

If you are replacing current French doors, or making the current opening larger to accommodate French doors, then as long as the work is being done in the rear of your home and not facing a road, you shouldn’t need planning permission. However, if you have a listed property, or are in a protected area, you should double check before the work begins, as you may need to meet certain regulations. At St. Ives Windows, we can ensure your doors meet building regulations.

Can French doors be made to swing inwards or outwards?

Because St. Ives Windows manufactures your doors to your own specifications, we can design them to swing inwards or outwards. Inwards-opening doors can be useful in homes where there are obstacles in the garden such as furniture or trees, although you need to make sure there’s space indoors to open them all the way. French doors are most commonly built to swing outwards, as this saves space inside your home. If you aren’t sure what would work in your home, get in touch and we’d be happy to discuss your needs.

Can French doors increase my home’s value?

French doors can be a way of adding value to your home. This is because it allows natural light into your home and can make a small living space look more spacious. If you have a lovely garden or view of the Cornish coast or countryside, French doors can really show it off and impress potential buyers. When you choose St. Ives Windows to manufacture and install your French doors, you can be sure of a professional, stylish finish. These doors are made to be secure and offer you thermal efficiency, as well as to look good for years to come.
