Double Glazing

  • Double glazing helps turn your home into a cosy haven. It helps prevent heat loss and stops draughts coming in, as well as reducing the amount of noise you hear from the outside, ideal for those who live in busy areas.

Double-glazed windows are made by using two panes of glass in the same window frame. These panes have a gap between them that’s filled with a dense gas called argon. This means that when cold air hits the outside pane, very little cold is transferred to the inner windowpane. Unlike single glazed windows, you also get a lot less condensation on the inside of your frame.

All double-glazed windows made by us at St. Ives Windows have high energy saving ratings. However, if you’d like even better levels of energy efficiency, we can also offer you Super Energy Efficient glazing, or even triple glazing, which is made in the same way as double glazing, but with an additional pane of glass for extra insulation.

Installing double glazing also has security benefits. It’s very difficult to break double glazing, and when we manufacture our windows, we use thermally toughened glass for doors and ground-floor windows. We also use strong hinges and locks for your peace of mind.

Is it worth replacing double glazing?

Double glazing tends to have a lifespan of around 20-30 years, and as your windows get older, they tend to become less efficient. If you’ve noticed that your windows don’t seem to be insulating your home as well as they once did, it might be worth replacing them.

If your windows are less than 10 years old, and you’ve noticed they aren’t working as efficiently as you like, then you may be able to choose the more cost-effective option of getting them repaired. At St. Ives Windows, we offer a 10-year guarantee on our windows, so if they aren’t working to the highest standard, we can repair them for you.

Can double glazing reduce condensation?

If you’re fed up of finding condensation on your window panes, then you might want to opt for double glazing. Condensation is caused when warm air hits a cold windowpane, which turns the humidity in the air into water droplets.

Double glazing slows the transfer of cold air outside from hitting the inner windowpane. It’s made up of two panes of glass, separated by a small gap filled with a dense gas called argon. This means your inner windowpane stays around the same temperature as your home, even if it’s freezing outside, meaning condensation is kept to a minimum.

What is double glazing?

Double glazing is made up of two panes of glass with a gap in the middle. These two panes are set inside the same frame, and argon gas is trapped inside. Argon gas is dense, so it acts as a kind of barrier, so when cold air hits the outer pane, the cold doesn’t transfer to the inside. The same goes for soundwaves, they are quietened before they reach your home.

Double glazing can have a big effect on the energy efficiency rating of your property, so if you invest in new windows, you can pay less for heating.

What is the best gap for double glazing?

The reason why double glazing provides insulation and dampens exterior noise is because of the gap between the two panes of glass. Inside this gap is argon, a gas that’s denser than air, slowing soundwaves and cold air from moving through to the inside.

We’ve perfected our double-glazing manufacturing techniques over the years and found that units that are 28mm thick, with a 20mm gap, works best. This is what we offer as standard with all our windows, whether you opt for sash windows, casement windows, or any other style.

Does double glazing reduce noise?

Installing double glazing is an excellent way to reduce noise. If you have single glazing, soundwaves travel easily through the glass. However, double glazing is made up of two panes of glass, with the gap filled with argon gas, dampening the noise from outside.

The reason why double glazing is so effective is because of the gas inside the panes. Argon is denser than air, so soundwaves can’t pass through it as well. This means, when you shut your windows, exterior noise is reduced significantly. If you live near a busy road or in an area of Cornwall that gets noisy during tourist season, why not consider our Stadip Silence laminate as well? It keeps noise to an absolute minimum so your home is a calm haven.

How long will my double glazing last?

There are a number of factors that determine how long your double glazing will last. In general, you can expect your double-glazed windows to last for about 20-30 years with minimal maintenance. You should make sure you choose windows that are A-rated, to provide the best energy efficiency, and have them installed by experts such as our team at St. Ives Windows, to prevent draughts and ensure the best finish.

It’s usually easy to tell when double glazing isn’t working as well as it should. You may notice your inner windowpane feeling noticeably cold to the touch, or that excessive condensation forms inside.

Do I need to replace my double glazing?

Double glazing will usually last 20-30 years. But as windows get older, you may find they are less efficient than when they were first installed. If they aren’t working as well as they used to, then it may be time to think about replacements.
