-
If you want an easy way to add some more space to your home, as well as letting in lots of natural light, then our range of bay and bow windows might be right for you. They add style to both your home’s interior and exterior and make an interesting feature.
St. Ives Windows can create bay and bow windows in a wide range of designs, styles and colours, so you can get the perfect finish. Once installed, you can enjoy sunshine streaming into your home and make any room feel bigger.
Bay windows are more common than bow windows. They tend to feature three straight sides or are fitted at an angle for a trapezoid shape that protrudes from your home. They have multiple window panes, and you can choose which ones you want to open.
While bow windows are similar but are made up of multiple panels at slight angles, which creates a semi-circle shape. This adds character and style to your property.

Can you hang curtains in a bay or bow window?
Bay and bow windows let in lots of light during the day, but you can also install curtains, so that at night, you can make the room feel comfortable and cosy. You can buy curtain rods that are made in sections, with small gaps that allow the curtain to be pulled all the way around a bay window without obstruction. If you have an arc-shaped bow window, you can find flexible curtain rods that will fit the semi-circle shape.
Can a bow or bay window increase my home’s value?
A bow or bay window can be an excellent way of increasing your home’s value. They let more natural light into your home, which is something buyers often look for, and add space to the room in which they’re installed. This means you can create a pleasant seating area, breakfast nook, or even build some storage into the space. It also means you can enjoy 180-degree views from your home, which can be a good selling point if you live somewhere beautiful in Cornwall.
How many sides does a bay window have?
Bay windows are usually made with three sides, the largest one parallel to the house and the other two at a 45-degree angle, which creates a trapezoid shape. You’ll often see this style in Victorian or 20th century homes across the UK. However, it’s becoming common to see box bay windows, which have a rectangular shape, as these tend to be a little more practical and it’s easier to find furniture that fits. St. Ives Windows can design and manufacture a bay, box or bow window that suits your home.
Are bow and bay windows different things?
Bow and bay windows have the same purpose, to add light and space to your property, but they have slight differences. A bay window is made from three panels set in a trapezoid or rectangle shape, while a bow window is made from multiple panels, usually between four and six which are arranged in an arc shape. Bow windows are usually a little wider than bay windows to be able to achieve the curved look. St. Ives Windows can help you choose the right look for your home.
Can you open bay or bow windows?
Whether your bay or bow windows open is up to you. They can be designed simply to let light into your home, so they don’t open, or you can opt to have some or all of the panels being able to open for fresh air. Bay windows usually have three panels, so you can choose which ones open. Bow windows are made up of lots of smaller thinner panes, so it’s worth noting that it may only be smaller sections that can be opened.
What can I do with my bay window?
A bay window creates extra space in your home which can be used in many different ways. Many people opt to add a seat that fits perfectly in a space, with storage shelves underneath for books or whatever you like. Breakfast nooks are also a good use of a bay window. Simply add a small table and comfortable armchairs, and you can sit and enjoy the view with a cup of tea. Visit the St. Ives Windows showroom for design inspiration.
