Casement Windows

  • Our range of casement windows has been designed to suit all sorts of homes. Casement windows are windows that attach to the frame with a hinge, either side hung or top hung, and they can be made to open either inwards or outwards to suit your needs.

Choose a top hung casement window and you can open them up for extra ventilation in all weathers. You can angle them according to how much air you want to let inside. However, because of the way they are designed, if it rains, the inside of your home doesn’t get wet.

Casement windows are one of the most popular styles at St. Ives Windows. All the windows we install are made in our UK factory and installed by experts, so you get the perfect look and finish. With so many frame styles, colours and finishes available, you’ll no doubt find casement windows that you love.

Common questions

What is a casement window?

A casement window is a type of window where the panes are attached to the frame with hinges. You will find both single and paired casement windows within one frame, and these windows can be designed so that they open inwards or outwards, depending on what fits in with your home.

Side hinge casement windows are the most common style, but you can also find top hung casement windows. These are also known as awning casement windows and are hinged at the top, so even on rainy days you can open them a crack and let in a breeze. If you have a space like a basement, you might also consider hopper windows, which are bottom hung.

Can casement windows improve energy efficiency?

When we create casement windows in our factory, we build them with an airtight seal between the sash and the frame. This acts as a natural insulator for your home, keeping cold air from getting in and stopping warm air from escaping. Many people find this lowers their energy bills.

While our casement windows come with double glazing, you can upgrade to triple glazing if you wish. This is ideal for older, draughty homes or homes in Cornwall where there’s a lot of noisy traffic.

Are casement windows different to picture windows?

Casement windows are made to open on a hinge, so when you need air, they swing open to let a breeze inside. They are usually made out of multiple panes, so while they can be created with slim frames, you don’t get a totally unobstructed view.

Picture windows are usually made out of one or two panes of glass. They are great for areas where you have a view of the sea or any other beautiful landscape as they allow for an unobstructed view. The main problem with picture windows is that they don’t open, so you can’t let a breeze inside. They’re more suited to places like hallways where you won’t want opening windows.

Are casement windows secure?

When St. Ives Windows build our casement windows, we make them very difficult to break into. They have hook-  shaped locks, so if a potential intruder was to try and pry them open, this would be almost impossible. Also, all windows are built with a secure lock for your peace of mind.

St. Ives Windows work with the police under an initiative. This means we work hard to make our windows as secure as possible to keep you and your property safe.

How much will casement windows cost?

St. Ives Windows are happy to give you a free, no-obligation quote for new casement windows. The cost of your casement windows will depend on their size as well as the materials you choose. UPVC is the most cost-effective option, with lots of colours and woodgrain finishes available. You can also opt for aluminium, although it is more expensive.

The cost of casement windows will also depend on the complexity of the job. If you’re replacing like for like windows, installation will be easy, but if you are switching to casement windows, the process may be more complex.

Is it worth getting casement windows?

If you want to improve your home’s energy efficiency while also letting in light and air, then casement windows might be right for you. They create a tight seal, which stops cold air getting in, while stopping warm air from leaving, so you can lower your energy bills.

Our casement windows are also very easy to use and can be opened and closed with one hand thanks to the crank mechanism. Even if you have limited mobility, you should be able to operate these windows.
